Funding: The Research Budget
Last updated:

This section presents the main figures for the Sciences Po research
budget. It is updated annually according to the calendar for the
preparation of the certified accounts. For an outline of the sources
of funding, click here (French).
A
sizeable budget
In 2007 the budget for research at Sciences Po totaled €40,8
million, or 36% of the master
budget for the whole of Sciences Po.
The lion’s share (70% of the research budget) goes to cover
payroll expenses.
The second-biggest item (11%) is our operating
budget, a considerable portion of which is used to enable
researchers to do fieldwork or attend international conferences.
Sciences Po provides various grants and funds
to help its doctoral students and young scholars enter –
and establish themselves in – the international
world of research. For more information, see funding
and grants (in French).
The third-largest allocation (8% of the budget) covers the cost
of the premises, seeing as researchers
need space in which to meet, receive visitors, and share documents
and other resources.
Rapidly
rising
All in all, Sciences Po’s spending on research centres
(whether associated with the CNRS or not) has markedly
increased in recent years.
Witness the 54% leap in budgetary appropriations to CEVIPOF (Centre
for Political Research) between 2003 and 2005. During the same
period, appropriations to CERI (Centre for International Studies
and Research) increased by 21%, to CHSP (Centre for History Studies)
by 70%, and to the CSO (Centre for Studies in Organizational Sociology)
by 142%.
This rise reflects our resolve to boost research funding considerably,
while making a special effort to shore up our newest and least-endowed
research centres. (For more information, see the history
of research at Sciences Po in Frenche.)
