From 20 to 24 June 2006 Sciences Po will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of its refoundation by General de Gaulle, with a grand festival of knowledge.

By means of an Edict issued on October 9 1945, Sciences Po was entrusted with the mission of ensuring the progress and dissemination of the social, economic and political sciences in France and abroad. This is still our mission today.

Thus the 60th anniversary, as well as being a celebration of six decades of academic activity, is also an opportunity to outline perspectives for the future, in a complex world where traditional points of reference are in danger of losing their relevance. The five-day programme of lectures and debates, round-tables and discussions will address the fundamental issues facing our societies in the coming decades.

This festival of knowledge is intended to serve as a kind of academic forecast of key themes of interest not only to universities and research institutions, but also to each and every individual in our societies. It brings together some of the finest academics and researchers from France and around the world.

The high point of the occasion will be the conferring of Honorary Doctorates. Such awards have been made only exceptionally in the history of Sciences Po: to date, similar awards ceremonies have been held only twice, in 1989 and 1993. The present occasion honours six leading figures from international university teaching and research: Robert O. Keohane (Princeton University), Peter A. Hall (Harvard University), Mark Granovetter (Stanford University), Mario Monti (Università Bocconi), Horst Möller (Institut für Zeitgeschichte) and Edmund S. Phelps (Columbia University).
