The Doctors Honoris CausaThe Honorary Doctorate degree was instituted at national level in France by a decree of 20 June 1918. It is the most prestigious university degree to honour personalities from outside France who have rendered distinguished service to the Sciences, Letters, Arts, the University, or indeed to France itself. Sciences Po has awarded such degrees since October 1974. However, such awards remain exceptional in the history of our Institute and have previously been conferred only twice, at ceremonies held in 1989 and 1993. In 1989, degrees were awarded to Henry Ehrmann (Dartmouth College), Albert Hirschman (Princeton University), Sergio Romano (Italian Ambassador). In 1993, degrees were conferred on Boutros Boutros Ghali (Secretary General of the United Nations), Karl Dietrich Bracher (University of Bonn), Alexandre Lamfalussy (Bank for International Settlements), Théodore Lowi (Cornell University), Charles Tilly (New York University). To mark the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the refoundation of Sciences Po, six international academic personalities are to be honoured: Robert O. Keohane (Princeton University), Meeting on 27 June 2005, the Executive Committee of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris unanimously approved the proposal to award degrees to the six personalities cited above. The decision of the Executive Committee was ratified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 1st 2005. During the awards ceremonies, the six recipients will each give a lecture
