Master Governing the large metropolis 

 

Semester 1 at Sciences Po (September/December)

The first semester is organised around high level academic classes to provide analytical skills and solid background on issues of urban public policy, economics and governance, urban sociology in the context of the large metropolis.

Formal lectures

  • Urban worlds : globalisation and urbanization
  • Government and governance of metropolis : rescaling, democracy, public policies
  • Utilities : urban capitalism,  technical networks,
  • Risks and disasters  in the city
  •  Sociology of the global city : mobility, fragmentation, 

Methods :

  • Cartography
  • Statistics
  • Qualitative surveys

 Working trip in a metropolis

Semester  2 at Sciences Po (January April)

During the second semester, the priority is given to the analysis of the governance of large metropolis in different part of the world. Teaching is not organised as formal lectures but as a seminar. The seminar coordinator is bringing professional from different public and private organisations together with some academic involved in policy work.

Seminars on public policies, governance and social transformation of cities, mix of sessions : academics and professionals

Sustainable development in large cities
Law in the city

 Methods

  • Statistics (level 2 or 3)
  • GIS
  • Urban data on the internet (with the media lab)

Capstone (two days a week)

Short Term  : May June

Short specialised session (between three days or one week)
Invited professors (Professionals and Academics) on a regular basis of leading professionals and academics, if possible as part of exchange between their universities and Sciences Po

Case studies

Semester  3  Sciences Po (September December)

The third semester aims at providing students with management  and policy skills, research methodology for those aiming at a Phd. Some optional seminars are included together with cases studies workshop organised by professionals

  • Management skills (with the MPA)
  • Writing policy memo
  • Project accounting, project management
  • Research methodology, preparing the master thesis

Research seminars

  • Comparative urban policy : implementation
  • Race in the city
  • Political order in the city : police, army versus gangs, social movements

Workshop based on case studies and taught by professionals

  • Managing infrastructures
  • Poverty, legal and illegal settings, versus local welfare state
  • Immigration and transnational networks
  • Feeding the city

Semester 4 : out.

Six months for a work experience or a  research/thesis or an applied study in relation to one of our partners (university of think tanks) in Northwestern (Chicago), Columbia (New York), Collejio de Mexico, Université de Sao Paolo, Université fédérale de Rio, University of Cape Town, University of New Delhi, Hitotsubashi à Tokyo et Tongji (Shangaï).
